The Nature Reserve & Recreation Park of Prainha is located on the north coast of the island of Pico and covers an area of 15 hectares of the Mistério of the parish of Prainha, offering a superb view of the Pico-São Jorge channel. The soil is formed by several layers of volcanic rock resulting from an eruption that took place in 1562 and is covered by native vegetation, as the tree heath (Erica azorica) and the firetree (Morella faya), by invasive exotic species, as the Sweet Pittosporum (Pittosporum undulatum), and by pine trees (Pinus sp.), there planted for reforestation purposes.

A tidy net of paths, always flanked by ornamental plants, leads to the different corners of the Reserve. The visitor may appreciate the magnificent landscape or choose to use the different leisure areas, as the picnic grounds, the sports pavilion and a large lawn next to Baía das Canas. The Eira (threshing-floor), the Moinho (mill), the Adega (wine cellar) and the Atafona (grinding mill), of great ethnographic interest, are part of the Prainha Forestry Dissemination Centre, which bear witness to the importance the forest played in everyday rural life.
