Nature Reserve & Recreation Park of Terceira
The Nature Reserve and Recreation Park of Lagoa das Patas is located in the heart of the island, close to the Estrada das Doze which connects Pico da Bagacina to Doze Ribeiras; its name derives from an artificial lagoon fed by the stream of Ribeira Brava.
The recreation equipments are spread around woods of Japanese red cedar which encircle the picturesque lagoon (Lagoa das Patas) and transform the scenery into an idyllic venue for leisure and picnics on the island of Terceira.

A leisure park since 1950, the Nature Reserve and Recreation Park of Serreta is definitely the oldest recreation park of the island. Among eucalyptuses, pine trees and Pittosporum undulatum (and their pleasant fragrances) one can find tables and benches beckoning for a quiet reading or the joy of a meal.
The ‘chafariz da pomba’ (fountain of the dove), an elaborate work of stone from the parish of Posto Santo, and the house where nowadays exhibits and meetings are held, are surely two of the highlights of the Reserve.

How to get there:
The Nature Reserve, which is cut in half by the Estrada Regional no. 1, is also a meeting point for the largest and oldest pilgrimage of the island of Terceira, which takes place in September when of the feast of Nossa Senhora dos Milagres.

Monte Brasil was formed by submarine volcanic activity in shallow waters, having the new land become connected to the middle area of the southern coast of the island of Terceira. The need for a strategic defence of the town and bay of Angra do Heroísmo lead to the construction of several forts in the peninsula over five centuries, the most impressive one being the Fort of S. João Batista (sixteenth century), a jewel in the military crown bearing 4 km of walls surrounding the Monte.
The twentieth century witnessed a strengthening of the military vocation of the place: anti-aircraft batteries were there installed during World War II. Nevertheless, the production of vegetables that there took place once foretold a much more pacific purpose, that of the Nature Reserve & Recreation Park of Monte Brasil.
To the vast natural and architectural (military) heritage were added the botanical wealth and the leisure equipments which turned Monte Brasil into the city park of Angra do Heroísmo.

The forest nursery of Falca is located in the parish of São Bartolomeu, around 400 meters above sea level, where temperature and humidity levels are favourable to the production of the Japanese red cedars, a tree constantly present in the landscape of the islands and the most important tree in the woods which encircle and protect this well-kept nursery from the wind.
Oaks, plane trees and other hardwood trees enhance part of the Forest Reserve, where visitors can enjoy the outdoor leisure equipments, the magnificent lawn and the relaxing setting.
